California is Completely Free of Drought for the First Time in 25 Years.

For the first time in 25 years, not a single part of the state is facing dryness. This milestone arrives after difficult years marked by below-average rain that intensified fire dangers and challenged its enormous farming industry.

An Update Shows An Absence of Abnormally Dry Areas

Thursday's report from the national drought tracker illustrated that all of California is clear of dry or drought conditions. This development resulted from multiple heavy precipitation that replenished key lakes like Shasta and Oroville well above their long-term norms.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve always lived in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a climate scientist.

From Intense Storms to Rainy Seasons

The path to this point involved powerful and fatal winter storms that battered the state in recent years, resulting in widespread flooding, electrical failures, and tragic losses. While those storms started to mitigate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Even into late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were deemed experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the start of the new year finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Is Below Average

However, experts warn that the end of drought status should not be confused with complete water security. Current readings of the high-elevation snow show it at approximately 70 percent of the average for this date.

This snowpack, which provides about a third of the state's water supply as it thaws later in the year, is an essential component for future water availability. Water officials point out that it is premature to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” commented a state water resources manager. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”

Even as the official status shows a clean slate, attention turns to maintaining this precious water balance throughout the rest of the year.
