Catherine's Traditional Yuletide Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Charity Helpers
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Yuletide celebration at the historic Abbey, with attendees featuring dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have helped their communities.
The sizable congregation will listen to a blend of carols, music and readings from stars like award-winning actors.
Centred Around Kindness and Compassion
The central message of the event, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on Friday afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.
Attending the event are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose child passed away from a tumour, and who set up a charity, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a terminally ill child.
"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the well-being of people," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the concert.
A Steady Comeback
The royal has been undertaking her own gradual return to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her first public speech for two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".
Music and Opportunity
Attendees entering the Abbey can listen to talented youth performers backed by the Future Talent organisation, set up with the help of the Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for music lessons.
An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who plays the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been helped by the trust, with funding assisting with instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "amazing" to be taking part in the evening's event.
"Pursuing music is often costly," she stated. She is now enrolled at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to develop their musical skills.
A Sisterly Duo
Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who is a euphonium player, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.
Within the audience will be representatives of different generations.
That will encompass young Saphia Turner, nine, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to collect donations for local food charities.
Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts
The Abbey has been decorated with handcrafted festive wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.
Among the musical performers will be recording artist Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."
The Together at Christmas carol concert will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
