American flight controllers are more and more looking for second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid during the government shutdown, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were told to keep doing their duties without pay.

But some have been missing, leading terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks due to weather and other issues.

Over three thousand US flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy said he expects the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the pressure," Duffy remarked in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to hear their worries directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, am I able to find an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest after the shutdown started.

The American federal closure entered its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, rendering it the second most extended halt in history.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," Duffy stated.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, leading to interruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the country and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as other flights extending north to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The FAA notice went out at 08:45 local time on the weekend. Many flights were back on schedule before noon.

Travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were postponed an average of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the FAA indicated Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airfield in the country, could encounter problems from low staffing later in the day.

The agency advised passengers in the state to check with carriers about updated departure times.

The situation precedes Game 3 of the championship, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday night, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest periods to fly in the United States.

Pressure on American aviation helped end a federal closure in 2019. Back then, the halt had reached its fifth week and disrupted airline operations, including pilot training.

It prompted a number of air traffic controllers to stay home on the identical date on January 25, 2019, temporarily stopping travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

That same day, the former president, who at the period was in his first term as leader, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, effectively ending the government shutdown after 35 days.
