Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.

The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
