Much like Storm Claudia hit the northwest the prior day, the home side overwhelmed Manchester United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a emphatic three goal victory for their manager's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their championship potential as they reinforced their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Losses for Manchester United

This result signalled back-to-back WSL losses for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since May 2024, leaving them seven points off the table toppers with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

United’s capability to juggle league and European football with a limited team has been a widely debated subject since they secured entry to the European competition. Looking at the fixture list, it always felt like this was the matchday that would truly test this ability. Sadly for the visitors, they seemed weary throughout, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had sought to freshen things up with a several adjustments. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all brought energy, although the omission of the in-form Malard to the bench was questioned.

Manchester City, in comparison, have no such workload issues. The City coach made one adjustment from the previous win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her first start since recovering from a fitness issue.

Commanding Opening Period

Initial Opportunities

After the Break

The most obvious substitution came from Skinner at the interval as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the match. Ex- City player Park came nearest, rattling the woodwork, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and failed to register a solitary shot on goal.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have added to their lead when a superb Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it was insignificant to the winning team. Having failed to overcome any opponent who placed above them last season, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against Arsenal and United to put them in a strong situation after nine matches.
